I was considering incorporating Red Laser in an office supplies search app, but this is a deal breaker!

Anybody seen anything like this? Suggestions?

EDIT: Ok, it's not the green/white arrows. Overlay still not getting dealloc message, and UI elements still not receiving events, but maybe the two aren't related.

I should be able to create a barcode there and scan it with the iPhone to have it take me to that web page. There are other cool possibilities, such as triggering the device to * call a number * add a contact * go to a web page * other stuff

I'll use Shop Savvy or i-nigma scanner until redlaser gets this, but wanted to ask if this was in the works or not.

Specifically, "You should add this at the back of your overlay controller under all of the overlay items", is not correct! Don't do this like I did. What a waste of my time... This should read like this:

Give your OverlayController's background view to your BarcodePickerController via [BarcodePickerController setCameraView:drawTheCameraImageOnMe].

Example: in your OverlayController:viewDidLoad: you need to make a call like this: // myBarcodePickerControllerInstance // myOverlayControllerBackgroundView (the live camera view image will display on this view) [myBarcodePickerControllerInstance setCameraView:myOverlayControllerBackgroundView];

It is unusual, in my experience with Objective-C, to pass a view into a class for it to manipulate. I would initially expect for a class named "BarcodePickerController" to provide a view for me to display. It took me much longer than it would otherwise have taken. Your release notes could use some clarification IMO. If nothing else, in your sample project, rename OverlayController's "UIView *cameraView" to something other than "cameraView".

Simply change the "b" variable and you'll be returned a string with the title of the item.

Unfortunately, there isn't much error checking. I.e., if you input a barcode value which does not exist, you'll get back a blank string (but hopefully that should be simple enough to deal with). Barcode values are synced with a variety of sources so hopefully it will be complex, yet robust, enough for your needs.

I've turned my iPhone off/on, have closed and re-launched RedLaser, but still get the same result.

Does the free version have a limited number of scans?

I am trying to get the RedLaser SDK (the new one built for 4.0) to run within our app in a specific way.

What we want to do is target our app for 3.x devices. In our own code we'll detect which iOS the user is on and then only allow barcode scanning if the user is on iOS 4.x or greater.

Here's the problem... it seems we can't even install on targeted 3.x devices anymore, even if we weak link the SDK. Are we doing something wrong? I realize that the barcode scanning is for only 4.0 and higher, but we really need to allow 3.x users to continue to install our apps, just with no barcode scanning based on some simple if/else logic.

Here is the error I am getting on all 3.x devices when the app is loading to the device (this is not from me calling any RedLaser functions, just installing):

dyld: Symbol not found: _dispatch_queue_create Referenced from: /var/mobile/Applications/DC7D456D-865B-4C74-BDD4-FC7FC4419C95/MovieQ.app/MovieQ Expected in: /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib

When I launch the barcode, with nearly identical initialization as the sample project (specifically the scanPressed method and a completely identical OverlayViewController class) I just receive the camera rendering. If I comment out "[parentPicker setCameraView:cameraView];" in viewDidLoad of OverlayController.m I do wind up seeing the overlay assets.

Any ideas on what could be going wrong? Just to clarify this is just a visual problem, i.e. although I can't see the targeting box, I can eventually get it to scan with just the camera display up.

I am also init'ing my OverlayController programmatically with this call "overlayController = [[OverlayController alloc] initWithNibName:@"ScanOverlay" bundle:nil]; " in my RLSampleViewController.m equivalent class.

As you may or may not know, Apple this month changed their policy regarding a private API that has been in use by RedLaser and many others called UIGetScreenImage(). It allows devs to be able to access the camera overlay on devices as far back as iPhone 2G with OS 3.x on it.

Now, Apple says we can't use this API anymore. Devs are now forced to use AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer (or others in the AV library) to get camera data, but this only works on iOS 4.x devices, which the iPhone 2G cannot use.

My question for you is, does the SDK now use AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer on all iPhones with 4.x (iPhone 3G, 3GS, and 4) and do they completely remove UIGetScreenImage()? If not, when is the update coming out?

I will not be able to upload my apps to the App Store until this is changed otherwise my apps will be rejected.

Maybe it could be clever, like eBay's search where it can try omitting different words to get different results (so, for example, my search was for an Animal Staaten Split Wheeled Holdall, Olive - but by omitting the word olive, it brings up other colours available; or some websites might leave out some of the words like "split wheeled").

Or is it that resumeScanning shouldn't be called after a call to returnBarcode:withInfo: (which in turn calls stopScanning)?

(My workflow is to use didScanBarcode:withInfo: to perform a service call, which if it fails will then resume scanning.)

When you build the application, you get the following error messages:

When will Ociptical release a new version of the SDK that fixes this problem?

I'm trying to export the list of items in Red Laser using the "email" feature. However, no email ever arrives on the other end. I've no idea where to start troubleshooting this. Any advice on where to begin?

When I scan a book using one of the custom apps it works fine...but if I scan a DVD or a CD barcode, red laser appends an extra "0" at the beginning of the UPC number so the websites in the custom apps error out and can't find it. When I scan the same CD/DVD using the standard red laser app they come up just fine so I know its reading it correctly through its own app.

Anyone know how I fix this so the custom app don't add this erroneous "0" to the front of the UPC for all CD & DVDs?

Emails to support are going unanswered and posts in this forum aren't being answered.

Seems I have no option but to try and get my money back through PayPal. How disappointing.

For one, the app needs better manual search capabilities. For instance, it needs ISBN capability for books (in the type code section). In other words, the code types capabilities needs to be expanded greatly, especially to accomodate books (a rather large market still)!

Also, the type code search feature needs the capability to search text in addition to just numbers. This is for those times when the scanner and code simply do not produce the desired results.

To expand on this last idea, the program really needs a feedback or report a problem button for those results that come back completely wrong, even though the scan is accurate and matches the typed in result as well. (Of course, this may not be feasible on the app creator's end of things).

A wider variety of search providers other than The Find and Google would be nice. Hey, how about an eBay category? That would be a novel concept for an eBay owned app! Amazon and Yahoo Shopping are a couple of other givens that should simply be included in this app!

For local products found in The Find, Google, or perhaps other search engines, map integration for locating local markets/stores would be a very useful tool.

Also needed is the ability to save the results in categories and/or wish lists. This is something that is loosing user of this app to others constantly.

A price watch feature would also be nice.

Lastly, the saving of products and lists needs the option to select (or deselect) those retailers from the list wanted (or unwanted) rather than simply having to take all of the results, whether they match or not and whether they are desired or not!

If these improvements were added, I would not need to use other apps in addition to this app. Right now, it is far too simple to be practical! While this app does what it does do well, it simply isn't competitive with all of the features of other apps!
